Porsche 918 Spyder

Category: Porsche | Author: | Date: September 30th, 2013

The 918 Spyder is powered by a mid-mounted V-8 displacing about four liters, making at least 500 hp. The performance: 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds.

The car will have one electric motor at the front axle and one at the rear. The gas engine will drive only the rear wheels, but the electric motors will turn the 918 into an all-wheel-drive car. Feeding electrons to those motors will be a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack. Fully charging the pack will take about seven hours on a 110-volt circuit, although a quick-charge option is likely. The gas engine will ensure that the car can be driven—quickly—regardless of state of charge.

The compact V-8 will sit directly behind the passenger compartment and be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The car will use a carbon-fiber monocoque, and will have a manually removable top that can be stored in the front trunk. Stylistically, it will be very close to the Geneva concept.

The 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder can be had either as a coupe or convertible with accents on the badging, mirrors, seats, dash, and instrumentation, as well as matching brake calipers. It costs between $161,650 and $173,050.

Mercedes will launch the S500 plug-in hybrid, the third hybrid version of Benz’s sedan. The Mercedes S500 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor that produces 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.

The electric motor makes 107 horses and 251 lb-ft. The plug-in luxury sedan offers a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 5.5 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. The car carries a fuel-economy rating in the European cycle of 94 mpg.

There are four modes: Hybrid, the car chooses the most efficient propulsion strategy and uses the gasoline engine only rarely for recharging purposes , Save-Mode battery charge level is kept high for use in urban areas that give congestion-tax breaks to EVs and plug-ins, E-Mode, and Charge Charge mode forcibly charges the battery while driving, which is inefficient, but more convenient than pulling over and plugging in. The S500 plug-in hybrid can also decouple the electric bits from the combustion engine and “sail” on electrons.

When the car is driving on electric power, the accelerator pedal provides feedback before switching on the combustion engine.

The carbon-fiber body, underbody made of a debris-resistant Kevlar-and-carbon-fiber composite, the two-seater aims to be the most visually exciting of this new generation of hybrid super cars.

The engine, a turbocharged V-8, opted to tune its 6.3-liter V-12 to produce 789 horsepower. An electric motor delivering an extra 161 horses pushes the combined output to a nice, round 950 horsepower. The V-12 engine mounts directly behind the seats to concentrate the car’s largest mass at the center and to leave room for the seven-speed dual-clutch trans axle and the hybrid hardware. The main electric motor is located at the tail end of the trans axle and attaches to the transmission mains haft.

During deceleration, the motor operates as a generator to charge the batteries, which are placed low in the structure just aft of the cabin. A second electric motor powers accessory equipment such as the air-conditioning compressor.

The power train mounts to a sub-structure attached to the carbon-fiber tub.
